A third terminal is being considered for Dublin Airport

If it’s built at all, it’s not likely to be anytime soon.

The possibility of building a third terminal is to be considered in a Government review of Dublin Airport.

According to the Irish Times, Minister for Transport Shane Ross has confirmed that the possibility of a third terminal will come up in a review of demand at the airport that will be commissioned by the Government.

Earlier this month, Dublin Airport revealed that 18.8 million passengers had travelled through Dublin Airport in the first eight months of 2016, an increase of two million passengers (12%) compared to the same period last year.

The Dublin Airport Authority has a site reserved for a third terminal if necessary, but that is thought to be a more long-term consideration.

Aer Lingus and other airlines would rather that issues such as facilities for long haul and transfer passengers and aircraft parking be prioritised ahead of a potential third terminal.

Renovations on the main runway at Dublin Airport started this month and are expected to go on for another 15 months; on Monday, meanwhile, it was revealed that the Departures floor in Terminal 1 would be replaced as part of a €10 million upgrade project.
