Bill O’Herlihy has been laid to rest in Dublin.

Attending the funeral were President Michael D. Higgins and Jobs Minister Richard Bruton, with O’Herlihy described as “a great light” and “a source of joy.”

Liam Brady was among the pallbearers, while John Giles and Eamon Dunphy both said prayers of the faithful.

“He had a brilliant career,” said Pat Kenny, before adding, “in a business that is very cynical, there was no cynicism about Bill.”

The funeral was held at Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour in Foxrock, with Bill – who presented RTÉ’s soccer and Olympics coverage for more than 35 years – laid to rest in Shanganagh Cemetery.

Bill is survived by his wife Hillary and his daughters Jill and Sally.
