Brock Turner is being released from prison on Friday after serving half of his six month sentence

Brock Turner is being released from prison on Friday.

Brock Turner was sentenced to six months in prison after being convicted of raping a young woman on the Stanford University campus in California. Now, just three months into the sentence he is due to be released, reportedly because of good behaviour.

Turner was convicted in March of three felony counts: assault with the intent to commit rape of an unconscious person, sexual penetration of an unconscious person and sexual penetration of an intoxicated person.

The case caused international outcry as the victim statement was shared and read by millions. The sentence was widely condemned for being too lenient.

Current law in California calls for a mandatory prison term in cases of rape or sexual assault where force is used, but not when the victim is unconscious or severely intoxicated and thus unable to resist.

The loophole which allowed for Tuner to be sentenced for six months is now being closed. The Bill was passed in California on Monday and now awaits the signature of the Democratic Governor Jerry Brown to be made into law.

This loophole was how controversial Judge Aaron Persky was able to give such a lenient sentence.

Prosecutors in the Stanford case had asked that Turner be given six years in state prison. If Turner is released, he will have only spent 3 months in prison.
