RTÉ are reportedly planning a newsroom shake-up that will see news anchor Bryan Dobson move to Morning Ireland from his current role on Six One.
Dobbo, as he is affectionately known, has been presenting RTÉ One’s flagship news broadcast since 1996 but will now make the move to RTÉ Radio One’s morning news and current affairs show, according to the Sunday Independent.
RTÉ, for their part, are remaining tight-lipped.
“Cathal MacCoille continues to broadcast on Morning Ireland and the presenter rosters are already completed for the coming weeks and months. RTE has no further announcements to make about Morning Ireland at this time,” a spokesperson told JOE on Sunday afternoon.
Meanwhile, Dobson’s co-anchor Sharon Ní Bheoláin has spoken out about the pay gap in Montrose after it emerged that she has been paid far less than Dobson despite doing much the same job.
Ní Bheoláin was asked to give her thoughts following the revelation that, in figures released from 2014, she was paid between €60,000 and €80,000 less a year than her colleague.
She told the Sunday Independent: “As someone who values her privacy the very notion of sharing my salary with your newspaper is abhorrent to me. I do recognise, however, inequality and gender pay are key social issues in need of examination and so it would be cowardly of me not to comment.”
She continued: “I can confirm the 2014 pay disparity you reference was accurate. However, this pay gap has since narrowed. In return for a pay rise, I have also undertaken extra duties.
“I believe that I am well remunerated, but, for the record, my pay is still considerably less than that of Bryan’s. I won’t be commenting further.”
Dobson was paid an annual salary of €195,816 in 2014, according to the report.
RTÉ’s spokesperson added: “RTÉ salaries and fees take into account a wide range of factors including levels of experience, length of service and range of duties or programming a person is involved in.
“RTÉ does not comment on individual staff salaries.”
