Cork City Council’s latest plans could make driving in the city a nightmare

Don’t you just LOVE one-way streets

Corkonians take note…

Do you have to drive through Cork City Centre on a regular basis? Then you won’t like the latest development plans unveiled by Cork City Council.

According to NewsTalk: “Plans have been unveiled to ban cars from Patrick Street in Cork city.”

Upon closer inspection you’ll see that the local council doesn’t want to ban cars completely, but instead they plan on making it a hell of a lot harder for private cars to get around the city with the introduction of one-way streets and a bus corridor on Patrick Street from 12.30 – 6.30 pm.

If councillors vote the plan in later this year, it will be implemented in two phases, which you can check out in full over here.

We’ve outlined the key points below…

Phase 1: St Patrick’s Street Area

  • Convert St Patrick Street to a Public Transport, Taxis, and Bicycles only street from 12.30 – 6.30 pm.
  • Convert Castle Street from westbound to eastbound traffic flow.

Phase 2: Prospect Row/Grenville Place/Bachelor’s Quay/Grattan Street/Sheares Street Area

  • Convert Grenville Place from two-way operation to one-way northbound from Sheares Street to Bachelors Quay.
  • Introduce one-way traffic systems on Moore Street, Coach Street, Thomas Street, Peter’s Street.
  • Introduce one-way traffic on the southern end of Grattan Street between Peter’s Street and Sheares Street.
  • Introduce a Bus priority Gate at the junction of Sheares Street with Courthouse Street
  • Introduce a ban on northbound traffic to Grattan Street from Sheares Street and Liberty Street

So what do you think? It’s sure to be some great news for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users, but not so great if you use your car to get to and from work.

Nothing has been set in stone just yet and submissions about the proposals can be made to Cork City Hall on or before 5pm on Friday June 5th. You’ll find out all you need to know over here.
