He overcame the final hurdle yesterday.
Donald Trump brushed past the last barrier to him becoming President of the United States when he breezed through the electoral college vote yesterday
Trump has 304 of the 306 of the pledged electoral college votes as two of the electors broke rank and voted for former Representative Ron Paul and Ohio Gov John Kasich.
Reacting to his win, Trumps said he would “work hard to unite our country and be the president of all Americans”.
The voting process is traditionally a formality but amid claims of Russian hacking, his support from White supremacists and Hillary Clinton winning the popular vote, there was hope in some quarters that this year could be different.
Electors had been assaulted with a wave of emails and phonecalls to break protocol and not vote for Trump but almost all remained true to the system.
“Today marks a historic electoral landslide victory in our nation’s democracy. I thank the American people for their overwhelming vote to elect me as their next President of the United States,” Trump said in a statement.
“The official votes required to secure the presidency by a very large margin, far greater than ever anticipated by the media.”
Vermont Governor Bernie Sanders urged for a change to the system in the wake of Trump’s win.
