Dublin Bus and Bus Eireann to sue the unions over this weekend’s strikes

There will be no bus services from midnight tonight

Tony Cuddihy

Dublin Bus and Bus Eireann are to take legal action against the two unions involved in strikes across the country tomorrow and Saturday.

Both companies are set to make an emergency application to the High Court tomorrow in order to recoup losses that are expected to run into the millions.

Legal letters have been served to both the NBRU and SIPTU, with both Bus Eireann and Dublin Bus describing the industrial action as ‘illegal, unprecedented and totally without justification.’

The companies both stress that they are not taking actions against their own employees, merely against the unions for what they claim is a ‘reckless and illegal action.’

Dublin Bus, which stands to lose €600,000 per day, normally carries 450,000 on a Friday and 400,000 on a Saturday. Bus Eireann is expected to lose as much as €1.5m in revenue over the two day stoppage.
