Dublin cafe says it “will not discriminate” against customers after government announcement on indoor service

“We stand 100% for inclusivity and equality. East Road Cafe is open to all.”

A Dublin cafe has said it “will not discriminate” against customers after the government’s recent announcement regarding indoor service.

On Tuesday, Taoiseach Micheál Martin confirmed that the return of indoor dining will be delayed.

He stated the reopening of indoor dining could come sooner for people who are vaccinated against Covid-19 as a new system to prove people have received the jab is currently being drawn up.

Government has said it will devise an implementation plan by 19 July.

In response to the announcement, East Road Cafe – located in East Wall in Dublin 3 – has said it will be serving all of its customers.

A statement posted to the cafe’s Facebook and Instagram read: “In light of the government’s recent announcement… East Road Cafe will NOT discriminate against any of its customers.

“We stand 100% for inclusivity and equality. East Road Cafe is open to all.”

It comes as pubs and restaurants, as well as some politicians, have voiced their frustration with the government’s new plan.

Labour leader Alan Kelly said in the Dáil to Minister Eamon Ryan on Tuesday: “What you’ve announced earlier as a decision from Cabinet in relation to reopening is absolutely bananas. It’s discriminatory. It’s unenforceable. It’s actually shocking stuff – amateur hour.

“When did government discrimination become the norm in Ireland?”

The Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (VFI) said the idea to only allow the fully vaccinated into hospitality venues was “highly problematic and probably unworkable for a number of reasons”.

The Restaurants Association of Ireland (RSI) also called it “discriminatory and unworkable.”
