VIDEO: Green Party leader Eamon Ryan brought a bag of rubbish into the Dáil today

The Leas-Cheann Comhairle was less than happy with Eamon Ryan on Wednesday.

Props are not usually allowed into the Dáil chamber but Eamon Ryan decided to flout those rules during Leader’s Questions on Wednesday afternoon.

The Green Party leader was admonished by Leas-Cheann Comhairle Pat the Cope Gallagher for bringing his plastic household waste into the chamber, with Ryan accused of ‘advertising’ during the session.

As Ryan ran the through the contents of his bag, Gallagher responded, “advertisements are not allowed in the house!”

Ryan – who was bringing attention to the amount of harmful plastic being mixed in with regular household waste on a daily basis – was then told he would have to ask a question of Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and remove the rubbish.

“There must be some dignity in the house!” railed the Leas-Cheann Comhairle, as Ryan insisted, “we are drowning in plastic. We have to cut out the waste!”

“The sheer volume of this waste must be tackled ahead of the legislation on waste charges to reduce the cost of waste disposal for Irish citizens as much as possible,” read a statement from the Green Party.

“We have written to all parties and groupings in the Dáil seeking co-sponsors of our Waste Reduction Bill 2017, in an attempt to have the Bill enacted before proposed changes to household waste charging systems take place later this year.”
