Emergency legislation to be passed today will make drugs illegal in Ireland once again

The fun’s over lads

The fun’s over lads.

Ireland’s status as a nation where drugs like ecstasy and crystal meth are legal is set to be an incredibly brief one, with emergency legislation set to be signed into law to reinstate a ban that had accidentally been lifted for 48 hours.

After the Criminal Court ruled that a law banning over 100 drugs was unconstitutional yesterday, Health Minister Leo Varadkar brought an emergency bill to the Dáil to reinstate the ban, which was passed last night.

The bill will be brought before the Seanad today and subsequently to the President at the earliest possible convenience so it can be brought into effect as soon as possible.

That all ended rather quickly, but yesterday won’t be forgotten in a hurry, not least thanks to Tom Dunne’s must-listen interview with Blindboy Boatclub of the Rubberbandits about the issue on Newstalk last night.
