Enda Kenny has apologised for not visiting areas affected by heavy flooding over the last week.
The Taoiseach told Mid West Radio that he was better off coordinating efforts to combat flooding from Dublin, but apologised for not turning up in areas badly damaged by the rising water levels.
Enda Kenny said that Minister of State for the Office of Public Works, Simon Harris, would visit the town of Crossmolina in County Mayo – Kenny’s home county – during Christmas week to discuss flood relief work.
Levels along the River Shannon are set to rise even further over the coming days as many parts of the country remain underwater after Storm Desmond. Some respite is expected on Thursday and Friday, but more bad weather is expected to hit the country at the weekend.
Met Éireann has warned of strong gale force winds this evening and early tonight on all Irish coasts and on the Irish Sea.
