Enda Kenny was asked about his leadership of Fine Gael while in Canada, he gave a cold response

Enda Kenny is currently in Canada for the first of a series of engagements in the Canadian cities of Montreal and Toronto on Thursday and Friday, which began with a meeting with Prime Minister Justine Trudeau today.

During a joint press conference with the Canadian leader earlier today, Kenny was quizzed by some of the assembled media about his plans for the Fine Gael leadership.

They asked when he planned to make an announcement about his departure as leader of Fine Gael.

To which Kenny responded: “I can’t believe actually that you have travelled this distance to ask a question like that.”

“I’ve come here to meet with the Canadian Prime Minister and Canadian Business to explore the opportunities that exist across the Atlantic for the creation of jobs and investment to the benefit of Canadians and Irish people. That is my business here. Next question,” he added.

When pressed on the subject, Kenny repeated his claim that he couldn’t believe the reporter “travelled this distance to ask a question like that.”

Kenny remained cool and collected throughout the exchange but it was clear that he wasn’t going to approach the subject of his leadership in that particular press conference.

Speaking at the same press conference, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said “it was a pleasure to welcome the Taoiseach to Canada”, and commented on the deep historical ties between Canada and Ireland.
