All those journeys don’t come cheap…
New figures have revealed that RTÉ spent almost €500,000 on taxis in 2015 to transport their staff and guests to their radio and TV shows.
When broken down, that’s almost €1,400 every single day, a figure revealed by The Irish Independent under the Freedom of Information Act.
When compared to previous years, there’s a notable increase in spending on taxis by the state broadcaster.
RTÉ spent €424,177 in 2014 which works out at around €1,162 per day. This was a dramatic increase on the 2013 spending by the broadcaster of €372,512, or just over €1,000 each day.
While there is no breakdown of the spending by department in RTÉ, the policy of the broadcaster is that taxis would only be used by staff for business reasons.
Figures from RTÉ’s annual report showed that it operated at a deficit of €2.8m in 2015 as costs rose for various reasons, including hiring more staff.
