Flooding ‘likely’ for several counties as Storm Gerrit hits Ireland

A Status Orange warning has been published.

Met Éireann has issued a Status Orange weather warning for four counties as Storm Gerrit hits Ireland.

Named by the UK Met Office on St. Stephen’s Day, Gerrit is set to bring a “swathe of strong to gale force westerly winds” across the country, as well as possible thunderstorms.

As such, Met Éireann has issued an Orange wind warning for Clare, Cork, Galway and Kerry – which is scheduled to take effect from 3pm on Wednesday (27 December) until midnight.

“Strong to gale force westerly winds, coupled with spring tides. Coastal flooding is likely,” it reads.

On top of this, a Status Yellow wind and rain warning for the entire Republic of Ireland is already in effect and is also set to last until midnight tonight.

“Very strong and gusty southwesterly winds in conjunction with spring tides, may lead to coastal flooding,” it states.

“Squally showers, with a chance of thunderstorms, may lead to localised flooding.”

As for Thursday, another Status Yellow wind and rain warning is due to come into effect for Clare, Donegal, Galway, Kerry, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo from 12am on Thursday until 6am on Friday.

This third alert reads: “Southwest to west winds will be strong and gusty at times.

“A combination of spring tides, large waves and strong winds may result in some coastal flooding.

“Squally showers may lead to localised flooding.”
