Flying to Heathrow today? You can expect some delays

Protestors have taken over the north runway at the airport

Climate change activists staged a protest on the north runway of the London airport.

According to direct action group ‘Plane Stupid’, 12 protesters cut a hole in a fence and got onto the runway at around 3:30am this morning.

While the runway reopened at 6:30, the protest has caused some delays and more are expected throughout the day as police have revealed that some of the protesters are still at one end of the runway.

Among those stranded at the airport is tennis star Caroline Wozniacki…

The protesters are campaigning against airport expansion ahead of plans to build another runway at Heathrow and they chained themselves to some fencing and refused to leave.

The ‘Plane Stupid’ Twitter account has been very active documenting the incident.

Yes, you’re right in guessing that the man has a bike lock around his neck…

In a statement, Heathrow Airport said: “We are working closely with the police who are dealing with the incident.

“Both runways are open although there will still be delays – we are sorry for the disruption to passengers. Our priority remains to ensure the safe running of the airport.”

Passengers are urged to check with their airline for changes in their flights before leaving for the airport.
