Former presidential challenger left in hospital with five broken ribs after attack

The injuries are more serious than were first thought.

Senator Rand Paul, who was among the Republican challengers for the presidential nomination back in 2016, is in hospital with five broken ribs after a strange attack.

Paul’s neighbour, a medical doctor named Rene Boucher, was arrested after the incident and charged with fourth-degree assault. Kentucky State Police originally said that Paul suffered “a minor injury,” but it appears now that Paul’s injuries are much more serious than first thought.

Paul, who is himself a doctor, has suffered five broken ribs, including three displacement fractures. Paul, who is a Senator for the state of Kentucky, is in such pain that it is not currently known when he will return to work.

It is unclear why Boucher attacked Paul. According to NPR, Paul was tackled when mowing the lawn outside his home in Bowling Green. Having begun with a relatively light charge, it now appears as though Boucher could face more severe charges given the extent of Paul’s injuries.
