Gardaí call for all of their officers to be armed with tasers

The Garda Representative Association have called for the move to happen.

The Garda Representative Association have called for all officers in An Garda Síochána to be armed with tasers following the recent news regarding Aidan Flanagan, a Gardaí that had to retire after sustaining injuries in the line of work.

Mr Flanagan was recently awarded €1.16m in damages after he was kicked in the back after making an arrest.

The incident happened when Gda Flanagan was only 30 and the figure takes into account his claim for general damages and loss of income.

In the wake of this news, the Garda Representative Association have called for tasers to be an mandatory issue.

In a statement via Twitter, they said:  “Gda Aidan Flanagan today received €1.16m for an injury received at work – he was attacked while effecting an arrest. Every day, frontline members put their physical and mental health on the line for all our protection. Let us now protect them. Arm all with tasers.”
