Gardaí discover 15 dead roosters after storming illegal cock fighting ring in Monaghan

Gardaí have launched an animal welfare investigation after storming a suspected illegal cock fighting event in Monaghan on Saturday.

The incident occurred at around 11am on Saturday, July 27, at a house in Emyvale.

A large crowd fled the scene when Gardaí stormed the residence, discovering 15 dead roosters at the scene.

A further 70 roosters were also seized by authorities, as well as the evidence of cock fighting.

In a statement to JOE on Monday afternoon, a Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí are investigating a suspected animal welfare incident that occurred on the morning of Saturday 27th July 2024 in Co. Monaghan.

“At approximately 11am, Gardaí received a report of a suspected illegal ‘cock fighting’ event allegedly taking place at a private residence in Emyvale.

“A large number of people fled the scene upon the arrival of Gardaí. The assistance of the Department of Agriculture was then sought and a warrant to search the residence under Section 45 of Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013 was obtained.   

“During the course of a search, 15 dead roosters were discovered on the property while a further 70 roosters were seized by a number of Department of Agriculture personnel in attendance. Evidence of suspected “cock fighting” was also seized.

“An investigation is continuing at Monaghan Garda Station and Gardaí continue to liaise with the Department of Agriculture regarding this matter.
