More than 20 arrests have been made and a statement was released.

An Garda Síochána have confirmed that a number of suspects are being detained and questioned with regards to a large-scale inquiry into a child sex abuse ring in the southern and western regions of the country.

A statement from the Garda said: “Gardaí have arrested a number of people in relation to an ongoing investigation. They are currently detained in Garda Stations in the southern and western regions of An Garda Síochána.”

At present, there is a court order in place restricting reporting on this investigation to prevent identifying injured parties.

The Irish Times are reporting that this recent action now “brings  to 23 the number of arrests in the case in two tranches months apart” and that this inquiry has been ongoing for two years.

The suspects, male and female, are aged from their 20s to 70s.

The suspects were detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
