The lads were left lagging behind.
Girls outperformed boys in 25 out of 32 Higher Level subjects in the 2015 Leaving Certificate, according to figures published in the Irish Times.
Gender analysis of this year’s Leaving Cert results in the paper found that Maths was only one of seven Higher Level subjects in which boys performed better than girls, with 72.5 per cent of boys who took the subject getting an A, B, or C grade compared to 68.5 per cent of girls.
Boys also performed better in Applied Maths, Agricultural Economics, Accounting, Engineering, Construction Studies and Latin.
Girls performed better in every other Higher Level subject and the study showed that a greater percentage of girls studied Higher Level subjects such as Irish, French and Spanish (all over 60%), while boys dominated subjects such as Physics (72.2%) and Engineering (94.4%).
