Gusts of 110kph leave thousands without power overnight

It sounded like a scene from Twister...

Oisin Collins

There were some incredibly strong winds last night…

So much so that over 2,400 homes across Munster and Connacht were reportedly affected by winds that reached speeds up to 110km/h.

According to reports, Carrigaline in Co. Cork was the worst hit area with more than 1,800 customers left without power overnight.

Thankfully, ESB is reporting that customers in the area should have their power restored by now.

You can find out which areas around the country are still experiencing issues over on the ESB website here.

While the strong winds are expected to die down over the day, heavy rain is still predicted for Munster and Leinster this morning.

The rain should ease off by the afternoon with breezy, sunny spells expected for the west and north. Tonight will be a cold one with Met Éireann predicting temperatures as low as 0C to -2C.

Make sure to wrap up and watch out for black ice if you’re heading out tonight…
