From new allowances to a new pricing structure, here’s a look at the biggest changes made to the water charges following today’s Dáil debate.

Ireland’s bigwigs have been discussing the water charges in the Dáil today and they’ve made a few new notable changes. So here’s all you need to know…

  • Unit cost of metered water drops by 25 per cent from €4.88 per 1,000 litres to €3.70 per 1,000 litres
  • Four-year cap on water charges until 1.1.19 – so no change until then
  • All registered households to receive ‘water conservation grant’ of €100 per year
  • PPS numbers no longer required for registration
  • PPS numbers already sent to Irish Water will be deleted
  • First bills to be issued in April 2015 (April Fools’ day, perhaps?)
  • Children’s allowance now 21,000 litres per year for everyone under 18
  • Those who don’t pay can be pursued by Irish Water
  • Irish Water must distinguish between those who can’t pay and those who won’t
  • Legislation to be introduced to allow unpaid bills to be deducted from tenants’ deposits if necessary
  • Occupier of premises must pay water charges
  • Flat €260 bill for those who don’t actively register
  • Those who don’t actively register won’t receive €100 grant
