Here’s how many Irish people Australia sent home last year for visa violations

Carl Kinsella

Do you know anyone living in Australia illegally?

New figures released by the Australian Department of Immigration suggest that the number of Irish people staying in Australia after their visas have expired is on the increase.

Between July 2014 and June 2015, 401 Irish people were ordered to return to Ireland after staying on beyond their allotted time. Of that 401, 92 were arrested and held in immigration detention centres.

The rest returned voluntarily, perhaps under threat of booting.

However, the number of Irish people in Australia on temporary visas is declining. According to The Irish Times, 5221 Irish people were granted visas last year compared to almost 20,000 in 2011/2012.
