Here’s how many Irish people have used legal highs, according to a new report

Carl Kinsella

A new report by the European Police Office Europol has revealed that 9% of Irish people have reportedly used legal highs.

Ireland’s use of legal highs is the highest in the EU, ahead of countries like Spain and France (both 8 %) and Slovenia (7 %). The substances on the list include variations of opioids, phenethylamines and synthetic cannabinoids (i.e fake weed).

The report, entitled EU Drugs Market Report 2016, also suggested that Ireland is also one of the worst countries for drug-related criminal activity when it comes to MDMA – with a 5% proportion of all global seizures taking place in Ireland, the fifth-highest rate globally.

The report also identified Ireland a key route through which cocaine is smuggled from the Panama canal into Europe.
