While politicians continue to negotiate and debate the terms of Ireland’s next government, legislation on Irish Water and water charges has not changed.
This means that Irish Water are, for now, obliged to continue sending out bills and those who receive the bills are legally obliged to keep paying them.
And to be fair, we may as well make it worth their while, since it is costing Irish Water €820,000 to send out the bills, according to Newstalk.
Each individual bill costs 51c in postage and 10c in printing costs. According to Irish Water themselves, 750,000 bills have been sent out so far – which is just over half of all the bills.
Reports suggest that there is a deal between Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael that water charges will be suspended for at least nine months – but until this deal is reflected in legislation, there is effectively no change when it comes to whether or not people have to pay the bills.
