Here’s what happens to your Facebook page after you die

Who would you choose?

Carl Kinsella

This is a bit morbid, Facebook.

This is a lot less light-hearted than the ‘Other Half’ feature on Bebo.

Once upon a time, a person’s last will and testament would generally include things like money and property, but now Facebook users can also bequeath control of their profile to whomever they wish.

Your ‘legacy contact’ will be able to execute a limited number of functions on your Facebook page, such as write one final status update, approve new friends in order to allow them to leave commemorative messages, and edit privacy settings.

Your name on Facebook will also be modified slightly, with the word ‘Remembering’ appearing before your first name. Your Facebook friends will also no longer receive a notification on your birthday.

Legacy contacts, however, will not be able to log in to your account, and as such will have no power to delete old statuses or pictures, or read through your personal messages.

If none of that is for you, you can also advise Facebook to delete your account after you pass away.
