“Finally on my way home.”

Ibrahim Halawa will arrive back in Ireland today after spending four years in a prison in Egypt.

He was released last week one month after he was acquitted of all charges relating to a protest in Egypt.

When he was just 17, Halawa was arrested in 2013 amid protests over the removal of then Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi.

He took to Instagram to inform everyone that he was on his way back home. He thanked everyone who had helped him get through this situation and stated that he would be touching down in Dublin just before midday.

The post reads: “Finally on my way home. Thank you to everyone who has caused this moment I love you all so much. Looking forward to finally coming home. I will arrive Dublin at 11.”

Halawa’s family have said that they have been preparing their home for his return as he gets ready to hit Irish soil for the first time since he was arrested.

He is joined on the plane by one of his sisters and Irish ambassador to Egypt, Seán O’Regan.
