75 different politicians have been paid in excess of half a million euro in just over three years…

The amount of money that TD’s earn will always be a contentious issue amongst Irish voters especially given the current economic climate that we all find ourselves in.

The RTE Investigations Unit have offered some transparency on the issue after they created a new tool that lets members of the public see how much their local TD has earned in the period between the general election in March 2011 and the end of July 2014.

Those who feel that this might be slightly intrusive should know that these figures were provided by the Oireachtas and they make for very interesting reading.

You can search by name, party and constituency to see how much was paid out to each politician in this period.

It’s definitely worth a look and you can see it here.

The same report also revealed some interesting information including;

    • In under three years, 75 different politicians have been paid more than half a million euro in salary, expenses and other payments.
    • Almost €100 million was paid in total paid to TD’s and Senators within the three year period. The 166 TD’s received €78 million in wages while €19.82 million has been paid out to 60 Senators.
    • The average money earned over this 41 month period is around €470,000 each, which equates to around €138,000 per year in salary, allowances and expenses.
    • Of the money made available to TDs, €22.9 million of it was paid out in expenses to cover the costs of their travel, accommodation and constituency spending.
    • The average expenses figure works out at €34,945 per TD per year.
