Important information for anyone travelling to the US from next month on

Conor Heneghan

Make sure you’ve all the boxes ticked before you travel.

The US Embassy in Ireland have issued a reminder to all Irish passport holders travelling to the US under the Visa Waiver Progam (VWP) that, as of April 1, 2016 (this Friday), they must have an electronic passport.

The VWP allows residents of certain countries to travel to the US on holiday, for business or while in transit for a 90-day period without having to obtain a Visa.

Three days before the new system comes into effect, the US Embassy have issued a strong reminder to those travelling to the US to make sure they are eligible to enter the country before they travel.

The need to have an electronic passport applies even to those who possess a valid Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).

You can check if your passport is valid for travel under the VWP here.

NOTE: Any traveller who does not have a valid electronic passport is still eligible to travel to the United States with a valid nonimmigrant visa issued by a U.S. embassy or consulate.
