Traffic could be a major issue between now and Christmas.
People travelling to Dublin Airport by car should be warned that the Departures Road at Dublin Airport will be closed for three months starting from next Monday, September 28.
Essential maintenance will start on the road from 4am on Monday and the upgrade work is due to be completed by mid-December.
The upgrade work, which is dependent on the weather, is one of a number of projects designed to give a more modern look to Terminal 1, which is more than 40 years old and is beginning to look a little dated beside it’s younger and more attractive sibling, Terminal 2, alongside.
An alternative set-down area will be provided at the rear of the T1 multi-storey car park for customers departing from Terminal 1 and a traffic management system will be in place in an effort to minimise disruption during the maintenance work.

Existing footpaths and roads will be replaced, a new drainage system will be installed and structural repairs will be carried out on walls and concrete columns as part of the maintenance work, which is needed after 43 years of wear and tear for Terminal 1, through which 375 million passengers have passed since 1972.
“Over the past 43 years the Terminal 1 Departures Road has been the main thoroughfare through the airport and it has endured much wear and tear during those four decades,” said Siobhán O’Donnell, Dublin Airport’s Head of External Communications.
“The T1 Departures Road now needs a comprehensive upgrade and this can only be carried out safely by closing the road to all traffic,” O’Donnell added.
“The upgrade to the Departures Road will also enable Dublin Airport to improve the overall arrivals area within Terminal 1.”
