Following the theft of 1,500 litres of heating oil from Whitehaven Respite Unit, a home for children with disabilities, OFTEC, the trade association for the oil heating industry Ireland and the UK has responded to help alleviate this situation.

After a call out to distributor members of the NI Oil Federation, Solo Direct have offered to give Whitehaven 1,000 litres of oil to help during this difficult time.

Police in Antrim are appealing for information after 1,500 litres of heating oil was stolen from a home for children with disabilities.

The Whitehaven Respite Unit in Whitehead, Antrim was a victim of the theft over the new year period.

Opened in May 1992, the Whitehaven Respite Unit has been providing a high level of care and support for severely disabled children and their families for over 25 years.

According to the BBC, the theft was discovered when workers reopened the home earlier this month and as a result, an overnight stay had to be canceled, which upset the children.

Acting deputy manager of the unit, Linda Guthrie, said that staff knew something was amis when the home was very cold.

“Because we knew there had been oil delivered in mid-December, we knew the oil was very likely to have been stolen,” she said.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area over the new year period to come forward.
