An announcement is expected later today.

Ireland is considering banning travel to and from the UK, with an announcement expected to be made later on Sunday.

Speaking on Sunday, Stephen Donnelly said that the Government was giving “serious consideration” to the issue because of fears over a new strain of coronavirus circulating in parts of England.

Speaking to RTÉ, he said that a decision will be made by the Government “today”.

This comes after Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands have all already banned passenger flights from Britain.

Doctor Susan Hopkins of Public Health England told Sky News on Sunday that the new strain of coronavirus had been detected in a number of different parts in the UK.

“Every region has cases but with very small numbers.

“It has also been detected in Wales, in Scotland, we have not had any detected in Northern Ireland.”

Speaking about the strain, the Dutch health ministry said: “An infectious mutation of the Covid-19 virus is circulating in the United Kingdom.

“It is said to spread more easily and faster and is more difficult to detect.”
