Irish employees ‘work harder’ than UK workers, new study claims

Stephen Porzio

The research found that on average, Irish workers clock more hours than UK workers.

A new study has found that Irish employees are working longer weeks than their UK counterparts.

In a statement, Irish office brokers Click Offices said they wanted to find out which countries work the hardest.

As such, it found out the average hours worked annually and weekly across 38 countries by analysing data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) between 2010 and 2023.

Ireland ranked 20th out of the 38 countries analysed.

On average, an Irish worker clocks up 32.8 hours per week of work – which is fewer than several European nations including Greece (36.94), Poland (34.85), the Czech Republic (33.97), Estonia (33.75), Hungary (33.19), Italy (32.96), Slovakia (32.87) and Portugal (32.73).

Meanwhile, the UK recorded an average of 29.31 hours per week, making it 29th on the list.

Out of the 38 countries analysed, Germany was found to work the least hours every week (26.58) and Colombia worked the most hours (45.46).

The data also found that the average weekly working hours in Ireland have decreased year-on-year since before the pandemic, from 33.5 hours in 2019 to 31.4 hours in 2023.

“Irish workers now work 33 hours less per year than in 2010, equivalent to one less week of work annually,” Click Offices said.
