Ireland’s 290,000 public sector workers could see their pay packets increased by 3% if new are introduced in the coming months.
A senior Government minister told the Sunday Independent: “The pay rises will be brought in before the Budget and before the Dail summer break. My expectation would be between 2pc and 3pc.”
The Government is also expected to reveal details of tax cuts and public expenditure of up to €1.5bn before the next General Election, as the country’s economic situation continues to improve.
Where this leaves the private sector is open to question, with another Government source insisting that those not working in the civil service will not be left out of any increase in their pay cheques.
“Fine Gael and Labour are united on this, there will be parity between the public and private sector on how the modest prosperity is shared out.”
