The Irish bantamweight boxer John Joe Nevin has said that he hopes to see Venus and Serena Williams after the Olympics are over. But he’s not saying exactly why…

Ireland’s search for an Olympic gold medal is coming closer to completion as yesterday saw the 23-year-old Mullingar man John Joe Nevin (above, right) beating the hotly tipped Kazakhstan boxer Kanat Abutalipov to book his place in the quarterfinals.

Whether or not John Joe goes on to win the gold, silver or bronze doesn’t really matter to us, as we’d be delighted with any colour medal coming back to Ireland. However, after winning his match last night, he now only has to win his next fight to secure at least a bronze for the country. So it’s looking good.

But it looks as though John Joe is looking forward to something else if he wins.

Speaking to The Irish Sun, John Joe said, “I’m just hoping to see the two Williams sisters and get my picture with them.

“It would be very nice to meet them, though we won’t say why.”

We think we have a fair idea as to why he’d want to meet the tennis totties, and we don’t think it has anything to do with hitting a few balls around a court. Or maybe it does?

John Joe’s next fight is against a 21-year-old boxer from Mexico called Oscar Valdez Fierro and it takes place this coming Sunday (Aug, 5) at 20.45. Hopefully John Joe will win securing Ireland’s first medal of the 2012 Games while also securing his own chances of meeting the Williams sisters.
