Leo Varadkar issues statement following phone call with Theresa May

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar spoke to UK Prime Minister Theresa May on Wednesday afternoon.

The pair spoke on the phone today following Tuesday’s vote in Westminster as MPs voted for May to seek “alternative arrangements” to the Irish backstop.

In the conversation, Varadkar said that the pair spoke about Irelands unchanged position on the importance of the backstop and how recent developments prove it’s needed more than ever.

May stated that further consultations are taking place in London.

Speaking earlier on Wednesday in the Dáil, Varadkar said the European Union, including Ireland, stands behind withdrawal agreement, including the backstop.

An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Prime Minister, Theresa May spoke by phone this afternoon, following yesterday’s votes in Westminster.

The Taoiseach set out once again the unchanged Irish and EU position on the Withdrawal Agreement and the backstop, noting that the latest developments had reinforced the need for a backstop which is legally robust and workable in practice.

The Prime Minister indicated that further consultations are taking place in London.

They agreed to stay in touch over the coming period.
