A Galway car dealership has got quite the backlash after reportedly giving a car away to a fake profile on Facebook.
The Audi Galway page awarded the prize of an Audi for the weekend to May Lydon. People got suspicious that no such person existed.
However, all of a sudden a brand new profile behind the name appeared as the irate comments started flowing in.
Audi Galway contacted us on Friday evening to clarify the course of events.
“David Lydon was the winner of the competition,” said a spokesperson. “He won the competition and asked that the prize be given to his mother, May Lydon. That’s where the confusion came in.
“We know nothing about the setting up of the Facebook page – as far as we can see it was just a nice gesture on his part.”
This was the initial competition…
Then we had the announcement of the winner…
Soon, people began to smell a rat when the following profile was set up.
The post has since been deleted, but thanks to Ian Devery for these screenshots.
Thousands of people entered the competition.
JOE has contacted the car dealership in question and are currently awaiting their response, but in the meantime they have posted the following update to their Facebook page.
Twitter, meanwhile, had plenty to say.
Would not like to be Audi Galway right now! http://t.co/S6dV9Q0iyq #epicfail pic.twitter.com/8ZgqwbDLvt

Looks like @AudiGalway have a busy weekend ahead keeping their Facebook page free from abuse after a botched competition. Ouch.
