Luas workers are no longer looking for a 53% pay increase

Tony Cuddihy

Luas drivers are backing down on their claim for a pay rise of 53%, which led to four days of strikes in February.

SIPTU shop steward Richard McCarthy said that the union was looking for meaningful dialogue at the Workplace Relations Commission.

While he would not reveal how much the drivers had reduced their claim by, McCarthy indicated that the planned work stoppages ‘were not an obstable that could not be overcome,’ according to RTÉ.

He added that the reduced demands were tabled in secret last week, but the Managing Director of Luas operator Transdev Ireland, Gerry Madden, said he had yet to receive any notification from SIPTU of a reduction in the claim.

He did say that even a reduction in the claim of up to 80% would be a significant claim for the employer to deal with.
