Minister for Health to publish report recommending medicinal cannabis use in Ireland

Joe Harrington

A lot of people will welcome this news.

Minister for Health Simon Harris will publish a report today that recommends medicinal cannabis be made available to patients with ‘specified medical conditions.’

The Cannabis for Medical Use report, which was compiled by the Health Products Regulatory Authority, makes eight recommendations in total.

‘Specified medical conditions’ means patients that haven’t responded to other treatments and where it’s proven that cannabis may be effective as another form of treatment.

According to RTÉ, the report “states that cannabis has potential therapeutic benefits, but there is a need for robust evidence to be generated through clinical research in patients.”

Cannabis is legal for medicinal use in a number of countries including The Netherlands, Canada, Australia and some states in the USA, where it is heavily regulated.
