A very interesting development on Dublin’s south side.
According to The Irish Times, Bono is playing a key role in plans to build a new film studio in Ringsend at the old Irish Glass Bottle site.
The U2 frontman reportedly phoned the former Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly to lobby for the project, which is the brainchild of Alan Maloney, the producer behind Brooklyn, and James Morris of Windmill Lane Studios.
Given the success of Game of Thrones – much of which is filmed in Belfast – and the fact that Star Wars Episode VIII is currently filming on the west coast, Bono and the two businessmen feel the time is now right to put Dublin on the map with a state-of-the-art film studio.
According to Morris and Maloney, Ireland “is now a very attractive location to produce television series and movies.
“Ireland needs the infrastructure to capitalise on the growth of the film and digital industries and the growing international success of Irish film making talent.”
More than 3,000 new homes are also planned for the 80-acre site, and it is thought that as many as 3,000 new jobs could be created in the redevelopment of the area.
