NUIG Students’ Union votes ‘Yes’ to actively support legalisation of cannabis

And it was a pretty resounding ‘Yes’ too

And it was a pretty resounding ‘Yes’ too.

NUIG Students’ Union have become one of the first student bodies in Europe, if not THE first, to actively support the legalisation of cannabis after a ‘Yes’ vote prevailed in a referendum held at the college yesterday.

As a result, the student body will now actively support the legalisation, regulation, cultivation, sale, and possession of cannabis for people over the age of 18.

Of the 2,634 valid votes cast in the referendum, over 68% (1,796) returned a ‘Yes’ vote, which is a significant illustration of the beliefs held about the issue by students in the college.

The ‘Yes’ campaign was supported by bodies such as the Students for Sensible Drug Policy Society, the Misneach Society, the Socialist Society, and the NUIG Sinn Féin Cumann.

The result of the referendum comes on the back of a public talk in the college last Friday, at which Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan, Garda whistle blower John Wilson and EU Independent candidate and glaucoma sufferer Mark Fitzsimons – all advocates of cannabis legalisation – all spoke.

The issue of the legalisation of cannabis has arisen in other Irish colleges in the recent past.

It will be interesting to see the reaction to developments in Galway and whether other students’ unions might hold similar referenda or express their opposition as a result.
