One Irish political party says they’re going to scrap the Leaving Cert if elected

This is why 17-year-olds don’t get a vote…

Renua Ireland, one of Ireland’s newer parties, is proposing to get rid of the Leaving Cert as we know it and replace it with a more practical equivalent.

According to The Independent, Lucinda Creighton’s party would restructure the Leaving Cert so that exams only account for 30% of a student’s final grade with the remaining 70% coming from apprentice-based achievements.

Students would work in fields such as tourism, metalwork, design and agriculture and be graded on their performance in a professional setting.

Creighton is quoted as saying “”The current Leaving Certificate is not fit for purpose. It does not teach the skills that are necessary for success in a modern economy. We will be failing our young adults if we decide, for convenience sake, not to reform this system,” ahead of Renua’s manifesto launch at 10am today.

Honestly, we’re not sure this plan would be any less stressful than the Leaving Cert is but it’s pretty unlikely Renua are going to be in a position to put this plan into action any time soon. The party is only running 18 candidates in the next general election, which will be their first.
