A proposal to name a bridge in Derry after Queen Elizabeth II has drawn criticism in Northern Ireland.
It has been reported that a motion from UUP councillor William McCandless to rename the Sandelford Bridge Coleraine will be discussed at the council next week.
Independent Councill Padraig McShane, formerly of Sinn Féin, announced his intention to oppose the controversial motion. He is quoted by Irish News as saying “It’s an Ulster Unionist election stunt that continues the debasement of the unionist electorate on petty, divisive politics”.
“The councillor worries himself about the Queen while she will hardly gives two fiddlers for him.”

The proposal is supposedly to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday, which passed just days ago.
