Plan A certainly didn’t work for the Remain campaign, and unfortunately things don’t look too good for Plan B either.
A petition to rerun the Brexit referendum, originally held on June 23, has been rejected despite its popularity.
Over four million people had signed the online petition asking for a second referendum if either side won with less than a 60% majority with a turnout smaller than 75%.
The UK voted to leave the EU by a very slim margin of 51.9% to 48.1%.
The British government have now formally rejected the petition, with the Foreign Office saying “The prime minister and government have been clear that this was a once in a generation vote and, as the prime minister has said, the decision must be respected.”
Over 33 million people voted in the historic referendum, which precipitated a huge fall in the value of the pound, the resignation of David Cameron and an unprecedented increase in reported race hate crimes.
