Pic: Loads of Canadians have been ‘Spocking’ their $5 notes and Bank of Canada are not happy

Highly illogical, but brilliant

Highly illogical, but brilliant.

The great Leonard Nimoy sadly passed away on Friday and was the subject of a wealth of tributes from Trekkies and the wider entertainment community.

Some recalled some of his most famous Star Trek moments, others fondly remembered his brilliant cameos in The Simpsons and a few will have thought back to his directing of the 1987 smash hit Three Men and a Baby.

No seriously, he actually directed that.

People in Canada arguably paid Nimoy the best tribute of all by taking a pen to their $5 notes and redesigning the face of Canada’s seventh Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier to make him look like Spock himself.

Nimoy isn’t exactly a doppelganger of Laurier but he’s not unlike him either and when Nimoy’s distinct hair and eyebrows and an odd Vulcan symbol are added here and there, the results are quite something.

Bank of Canada have confirmed that there’s nothing illegal about the ‘Spocking’ of the $5 bills, but they have urged people to stop doing it for security reasons and as a matter of national pride.

“It is not illegal to write or make other markings on bank notes,” Bank of Canada spokeswoman Josianne Menard is quoted as saying in the Toronto Sun.

“However, there are important reasons why it should not be done. Writing on a bank note may interfere with the security features and reduces its lifespan. Markings on a note may also prevent it from being accepted in a transaction.

“Furthermore, the Bank of Canada feels that writing and markings on bank notes are inappropriate as they are a symbol of our country and a source of national pride.”

Come on Josianne, you know that it’s a craze that will peter out before long, so let them have their fun while it lasts.

The original $5 bill will live long and prosper in its original form again soon enough.
