PIC: This Dublin City Council poster highlights people who have been illegally dumping in Dublin

And it’s been having the desired effect too.

People who have been caught illegally dumping rubbish on the streets of Dublin have been publicly shamed in a poster erected in one of the worst litter blackspots in the city.

Last week, Dublin City Council erected a poster that showed stills of CCTV footage in which people were caught illegally dumping rubbish in Frankfort Cottages, near the Five Lamps in the north inner city, one of the worst areas in Dublin for illegal dumping.

Although the faces of those caught illegally dumping have been slightly blurred, the Council reckon that the guilty parties would be identifiable to themselves and to local residents and it would appear that the poster is having the desired effect.

“We have identified that the people in the images are local people and, within a few hours of the poster going up, we had one person call in to us asking for the picture to be taken down because their neighbours would know who they were,” John McPartlan, public domain officer with Dublin City Council, told The Irish Times.

“It was remarkable,” McPartlan added.

“For the last 10 years we’ve had signage there warning people not to illegally dump, but every day we would have to clear up bags, and sofas and other furniture, and even builders’ rubble, but this poster has made such a difference.”

McPartlan has recommended that fines be issued to all of those implicated in the poster; illegal dumping carries an on-the-spot fine of €150 and a maximum fine of €3,000 if convicted in the District Court.
