PICS: This Mayo family are living in the middle of a lake after devastating flooding

Conor Heneghan

Some of these pictures are heartbreaking.

Ireland has experienced some of its worst flooding in generations in the last number of weeks and virtually no part of the country has remained unaffected.

The Connolly house and farm, located in the village of Roundfort between Claremorris and Ballinrobe in county Mayo, has housed many generations of the family for over 100 years.

They got in touch with JOE to show us how this winter’s flooding is the worst they have ever experienced.

The house has flooded twice before – in 2006 and 2009 – but the damage hasn’t been anywhere close to what has happened in the last week and the family are angry at the lack of action being taken about an issue that’s affected the entire country.

Stephen Connolly, whose parents and brother still live at the house, spoke to JOE this morning about the devastating impact that the floods have had on the house and farm, saying that “the situation in the house has become perilous for my parents and brother”.

“We frankly don’t know what we can do now,” Stephen added.

Stephen’s parents are still living in the house and don’t want to leave it to fend for itself, while the farm animals (cows can be seen standing in a foot of water) cannot fend for themselves and need help.

“We feel like there’s no action being taken. We’re totally isolated in south Mayo,” Stephen told us.

“No one is taking us seriously. It’s scandalous what’s going on,” he added.

The pictures below, taken by Stephen and his cousin Donal Kelly, illustrate the absolutely devastating impact that floods have had on the Connolly home and for a more detailed account, you can read Donal’s blog here.
