The incident occurred last week.

Portuguese outlet CM have reported that police are investigating the alleged rape of a British holidaymaker by an Irish tourist.

The 30-year-old English woman said the incident happened at the hotel room that the Irishman was staying in at Portimão, a town in the Algarve.

The report states that the Polícia de Segurança Pública (local police) took initial charge of the investigation and that it has now been escalated to the Polícia Judiciária – the national criminal investigation police agency of Portugal.

The alleged incident happened last Friday after the two tourists met at a bar on Rocha beach.

After returning to the hotel room that the Irishman was staying in, at 3:40 am, the uncle of the accused – with whom he was sharing the room – also returned home.

Upon arrival, he saw the woman emerging from the room with tears in her eyes. The woman then started knocking on the other doors in the hotel, telling people that she was forced to have sex against her will.

The police were immediately called to the scene.

The Irishman, according to the report, maintains that everything was consensual between them.
