Michael D. Higgins will continue to waive a quarter of his salary for the remainder of his term as the President of Ireland.
Back in November 2011, President Higgins advised the government of his intention to give 23.5% of his salary back to the state.
According to The Irish Times, he has no intention of rolling back on that decision now.
The President has been earning a salary of €249,014 since his decision in 2011, and will continue to do so. He also donates his Oireactas pension entitlement to the state, and pledged not to draw down any pension entitlements he had from his previous role as a member of the Oireachtas or as a minister in the Government.
The Times reports that the move will also be in place for the next holder of the office of president.
Government Ministers this week decided not to accept the €3,900 that was due to be paid to them on 1 April 2017 – the pay rises were due to come into effect as a result of the restoration of public service pay cuts.
TDs are due to receive €2,700 on 1 April 2017 and the same again in 2018, bringing salaries from €87,258 to €92,658.
