He has been described as a ‘gentleman’ and a ‘business titan’.
Tributes are being paid to Richard Quirke, the owner of Dr. Quirkey’s Good Time Emporium on Dublin’s O’Connell Street, after his death.
A Garda before swapping careers to establish his gambling business, Mr Quirke’s death was announced in a notice on RIP.ie which says he “passed peacefully”.
“Will be sadly missed by his loving wife Ann, children, grandchildren, sisters, extended family and friends,” the RIP.ie post adds.
Many have taken to the condolences section of the page to pay their tributes to the “gentleman” and “business titan” and their respects to his family.
One person said: “It is with great sadness that I learned today of the passing of Richard. He was one of the kindest people you could ever hope to meet in a lifetime, and he had a deep spirituality and faith about him which he shared through humour and unfailing support for others.
“I knew him for almost thirty years and will miss him greatly. You are in my thoughts, please accept my condolences at this difficult time.”
Another wrote: “Sincerest condolences to Ann and all of the Quirke Family on the passing of Dick. A business titan, he was inspirational competition and will be missed; may he rest in peace.”

A third said: “So sorry to hear of Richard’s passing and sincerest condolences to the Quirke family. Richard was a valued friend and neighbour for many years in O’Connell Street. May he rest in peace.”
“I am so sorry and sad to hear the news of Richards passing,” a fourth person wrote.
“He was a wonderful man and I have so many fond memories of him growing up next door. He was a gent and had a great wit about him. Thinking of you all at this difficult and sad time. May he rest in peace.”
Another left the message: “My deepest condolences goes out to the Quirke family and this sad time. I worked for Dick for 7 years and have always had the fondest memories of Dick.
“He was kind soul a pure gentleman and generous to a fault. It was a pleasure to work for him. May he rest in peace.”
Mr Quirke’s funeral mass will take place on Saturday morning, 12 October at 11am in the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour in Foxrock.
It will be followed by interment in Kilternan Cemetery Park in Kilternan, Dublin 18.
